Team A storm to Old Bond Store victory

Spring League sponsored by the Old Bond Store at the Tullamore Dew Heritage Centre

A very intense summer league took place over five weeks culminating in a final held on Friday 26th April. The competition saw 96 players divided into 8 teams of 12 and was a very exciting and tightly contested competition.  In the lead up to the semi-finals, only a few points separated six of the teams fighting for their place in the semi-finals.

Semi-Finals

Team AvC
All had battled hard but in the end Team A under the captaincy of Dorothea Skelton qualified to play Team C. Despite some excellent performances from Brian Moore and John Cooper, Team A proved too strong for them with talent such as Gearoid Donnelly playing on line 1, Geraldine Kelly on line 7 and the athletic John Kenny on line 9.

The gallery present at Tullamore Squash Club for the second semi-final of the 2006 Spring League between Team G and Team E were treated to an enthralling encounter between two very evenly matched sides.  Only one point separated the teams after 11 rounds of eagerly contested squash.

Team G led by veteran Tom Clarke in the absence of captain Margaret Lynch and Team E under the steady stewardship of Fran Coogan awaited anxiously the game 3 bout between John Conroy and Barry Fenning who was a replacement for Billy Dunne.  In the end, Barry won 3:1 after some lovely squash and outstanding rallies.  This ensured their place in the semi final.

Summer League Final
Team G had progressed to the final to meet Team A and was making progress with some excellent wins by John Coffey, Gerry Minnock and Hugh Geraghty.  However wins from John Kenny and Geraldine Kelly again turned the game around. Seamus Kane of Team G was expected to overpower Mark O’Donnell, but following a very poor performance from Seamus, Mark easily took the game at 3-0.  As Barry Fenning took to the court to play Peter Cronly, there was hope that a victory for Barry would keep the teams hopes alive but despite an excellent performance, the superior strength of Team A again came to the fore.

The results were as follows:

Team A  Team G
Gearoid Donnelly 3 0 Tom Clarke
 Alan Clarke 3 0 Andy O’Grady
Peter Cronly 3 1 Barry Fenning
 Mark O’Donnell  3 0 Seamus Kane
Clive Young  1 3 Adrian Kehoe
Aidan Lawless 0 3 Hugh Geraghty
Geraldine Kelly 3 0 Marion Grennan
Alan Loughnane 1 3 John Coffey
John Kenny  3 0 Brian Delaney
Dorethea Skelton 0 3 Gerry Minnock
Mary Cumisky 3 0 Marie Fitzgerald
Ethel Meehan 3 0 Mags O’Connor

Team A were crowned Spring League winners due to their excellent performance on the evening and throughout the league.  Thanks go to all who attended on the night, with particular thanks to the indefatigable and steadfast referees, the defeated captain Margaret Lynch, the victorious captain, Dorothea Skelton, our Club Captain, Rose Treacy and – above all - to the League sponsor, The Old Bond Store, Tullamore Heritage Centre.

The Old Bond Store at the Tullamore Dew Heritage Centre was host to the award presentation, where Club Captain, Rose Treacy and Eamonn O’Connor, handed out the winners’ prizes to the victorious Team A members.
